WHAT IS EXFOLIATION, AND WHEN IS THE BEST TIME OF DAY TO EXFOLIATE?

Hey there, ever wondered why everyone seems to be talking about exfoliation and why it's such a big deal? Well, let me help you uncover the secrets of exfoliation.

One of the most frequently asked questions in skincare pertains to exfoliation and its importance. Exfoliation is a natural process where the skin sheds dead cells and replaces them with fresh, healthy ones. However, only some people's skin sheds efficiently, and if your skin's natural exfoliation process is slow, you may experience issues like a dull complexion, rough texture, clogged pores, and breakouts. Exfoliation is essential for everyone, regardless of gender.  (🙄😄Me looking at the men as I type...lol...)

There are different types of exfoliating products, brands, and textures, but the primary methods are physical and chemical. Excessive exfoliation can increase skin sensitivity, and dryness, and even cause more breakouts and potential UV damage. So, when is the right time to exfoliate?

I always recommend exfoliating in the evening. You might be wondering, "But I apply sunscreen in the morning..." Exfoliating in the morning exposes your skin, making it susceptible to UV damage from the sun. Exfoliating at night allows your freshly exfoliated skin to make the most of your serums and nighttime products. It also ensures that if you experience redness after exfoliating, your skin has time to relax before being exposed to sunlight.

Now that you understand exfoliation and when to do it, here are some tips to guide the process:

  • For normal or combination skin, use a physical or manual exfoliator. If you have dry or oily skin, opt for a chemical exfoliator.
  • When exfoliating your body, wet your skin in the shower, use a scrub, and then a body wash, paying attention to areas like your feet, elbows, and hands.
  • To exfoliate your face, wet it, apply the exfoliator in circular motions, rinse with lukewarm water, pat dry, and follow with other products.
  • Avoid frequent exfoliation if your skin is easily irritated.

HOW TO PICK THE BEST EXFOLIATING MATERIAL FOR YOUR SKIN

If you have dry, acne-prone, or sensitive skin, consider using a mild chemical exfoliator like glycolic acid. If you have oily skin, opt for a stronger chemical exfoliator with BHAs or a high percentage of AHAs. People with oily skin can exfoliate up to three times a week, while those with dark spots or dark skin should use a gentle exfoliator.

You can alternate between chemical and manual exfoliators for individuals with normal or combination skin. Be cautious with manual exfoliators to avoid irritation. Avoid products with alcohol content to prevent skin irritation and breakage.

Do you want to know your skin type? Try this simple test: Press a piece of tissue against your face. If it has a thin layer of oil, you have oily skin. If it shows dry flakes, you have dry skin, and if it's clean, your skin is normal. Keep in mind that this test isn't 100% accurate.
